The most amazing thing to me about the new King Kong movie was not the nearly flawless special effects, not the 25 sumptuous minutes of uninterrupted dinosaur fighting, not even the touching ending moment; "It was beauty killed the beast"
It was Jack Black's performance which I would rate as no less than riveting. Actors ply their expressions, stances and inflections in a collaborative arc with the director, the script and the set. Jack Black's eyes alone radiated enough intensity to pick up the audience bodily more effortlessly than the giant ape himself could have.
We have all seen Mr. Black do his slightly over the top, dark comedy but as far as I am concerned his real gift is drama and I hope we see him in more roles like this in the future.
